Coconut is known for its diverse uses, ranging from food, beverages, medicine to cosmetics. Almost all parts can be used, so it is arguably one of the most valuable commodities in the world. Amazingly, all elements of coconut fruit can even be processed into products of economic value. Starting from the stem, fibers, leaves (janur) to shells. It is not wrong if coconut is seen as one of the most valuable commodities in the world.
Coconut is found in Southeast Asia, South Asia and Oceania. While the rest are in the region of South America and Africa. The majority of coconut producing countries have a tropical climate and have long coastlines. Indonesia itself is a country that has the largest coconut plantation area in the world. In 2018, the area of coconut plantations in Indonesia reached 3.4 million hectares. The area is spread throughout Indonesia, especially in Sulawesi and Maluku. Then in The World Atlas noted that the total coconut production in Indonesia until 2018 has reached 18.3 million tons, the figure makes Indonesia as the largest coconut producer in the world.
Referring to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), until the 2nd quarter of 2020, Indonesia’s coconut exports amounted to 988.3 thousand tons or USD 519.2 million. This export volume figure is recorded to increase by 16% and 17% in terms of export value when compared to the same period in 2019. This makes coconut commodities contribute quite large as a source of foreign exchange of the country from the export side. Currently coconut is ranked 4th as a foreign exchange contributor after palm oil, rubber and cocoa in Indonesia.
The Ministry of Agriculture records the producers of coconut products in Indonesia are currently scattered in various regions. Riau is the highest producer of coconut reaching 14.31 percent of the national average production. Furthermore, North Sulawesi 9.3 percent, East Java 8.89 percent, North Maluku 7.97 percent, Central Sulawesi 6.02 peren, Central Java 5.99 percent, Jambi, 3.66 percent, Maluku 3.29 percent, Lampung 3.24 percent, and West Java 3.00 percent. The map of the spread of coconut products in Indonesia is actually quite even and has a long history. What needs to be a record for the development of coconut processed products in Indonesia is the importance of research and development of products, especially processed coconut products. What can develop Indonesia’s potential in the future is downstream products instead of upstream products.
Currently most coconut farmers produce coconut in the form of copra, while the potential of other coconut derivative products both main products and byproducts is very large. Therefore, Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was held to improve market access and development of main products and coconut-based products based on farmer groups which is a series of commemorations of National Farmer’s Day 2020, in Manado, North Sulawesi (North Sulawesi), on September 24, 2020. The aim of the FGD is to explore the potentials of coconut derivative products in the province of coconut production centers and meet the needs of the world market through production and marketing partnerships.
